Violet Stigmata, Sala Revolver, Madrid (Spain), 4 March 2006One of the most interesting goth/ death rock groups of the new generation are called Violet Stigamta and are from France. I say "new generation" because they don't date back to the 80s, but all they same they've been arpund for some time now. They've released a enw CD recently, "Dyskronik Circus", which has received very good reviews in the specialized media, and one song from that CD was included in the compilation CD which accompanies the German mag Orkus a few months ago. We had the opportunity to see them in Madrid, and it was worth the while.
Violet Stigmata's presentation on stage was very sober, but at the same time very dark and sinister. Front man and vocalist Nico has got an impressing personality and doesn't need many extras to become the center of attention, and an equally impressing voice, which largely contributes to this band's peculiar character. During the first part fo the concert they played mostly "traditional" death rock songs, fast and aggresive, which soon induced the crowd to start moving. But after some time, their peculiar sound made its way through the more commonplace rock structures, as this band mixes lots of incluences into a sound of their own: sudden gloomy keyboard effects, some electronic elements, breaks which lead into a unexpected noisy guitar inferno... their last songs contained more electronic elements and heavier guitars at the same time.
As there was no supporting band, at first the band as well as the crowd seemed a little shy, a little distant, but that soon changed, the enthusiasm spread, and the whole atmosphere got crazier and crazier after each song. It's not easy to play this kind of music - complex, out-of-the-way and rather noisy - live, but the combined charisma of Nico, Fred, Celine, Laurent and Yan made everything seem just normal and natural. At the end of the show, Celine took the micro, and after an encore this amusing and rather special show came to an end. This and the fact that the venue had a good sound quality made the whole evening really enjoyable.
